The Castillo de Gibralfaro stands at the top of the steep Gibralfaro hill near Malaga, with a beautiful view of the Alcazaba at its base. The Moorish fortress castle was built on the site of a Phoenician tower in the 10th century and is now a popular venue for open-air performances.
Malaga was the European Capital of Culture in 2016, and to mark the occasion the Center Pompidou Malaga was built, a colourful cube-shaped building that houses works by artists such as Frida Kahlo, Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso and Alberto Giacometti.
The Centre Pompidou is primarily an exhibition space and modern art gallery. It does not have a permanent collection, which changes roughly every few months, always repeating selected exhibitions from its Parisian parent, the Centre Pompidou. Here you can find practically every artistic discipline, from painting to sculpture to photography.
The city’s popular beach, the blue-flag Playa de Malagueta, stretches between the marina and Playa La Caleta. Just a 10-minute walk from the city centre, this beach is surrounded by a palm-lined promenade.
The history of Malaga dates back to antiquity, when it was founded by the Phoenicians around 770 BC, and the city takes its name from the word ‘Malaka’, meaning ‘plant’. Málaga is also the birthplace of Antonio Banderas, who runs a local restaurant, El Pimpi, serving typical Andalusian dishes. One of Malaga’s specialities is freshly fried anchovies or boquerón, which is a must-try on holiday. There’s no more symbolic dish in Malaga than espetos, or spit-roasted sardines.
There is a huge park next to the Muelle Unomarina, which is like a mini jungle, making it the perfect place to relax after sightseeing.
